Slated to start in 2016, the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) is poised to drive economic integration forward across the region. Designed to provide for the free movement of manufactured goods, services and labor across the ten-member zone, it is expected to turn the region with 600 million people, with a combined economy of some US$2 trillion, into a free trade zone.

This will allow countries with high demand to meet their electricity shortfalls with imports from their neighbors at reasonable prices, and countries with abundant supplies but less domestic demand can generate income from their surplus power. This regional power grid will provide cheaper electricity supply for all member states while ensuring sustainability of energy resources and efficiency, which will ensure the region to be more.

Highways, roads and other infrastructure requirements, in line with increasing trade links between the various ASEAN members, are also set to expand exponentially as a result of the opportunities this economic and infrastructure integration will bring.
